Travelling the world is all about adapting to local cultures and societies. We wanted to present some missteps you should avoid when you're on the other side of the world !
Do not hesitate to enrich this list with your own experiences by leaving a comment ! See you soon tripconnectors ;-)
1. Order a burrito in Mexico? There is no point, they do not exist!
Yes, contrary to our beliefs, "Of course burrito is Mexican!", burrito is not Mexican but comes from the United States ! Don’t worry, you have plenty of great local dishes to taste: tacos, enchiladas, gorditas or tostadas.
2. Avoid bad jokes on cocaine in Colombia !
We all know Pablo Escobar and all the crime that ensued in the past. But keep your jokes to your friend, locals don’t really like to talk about this period. And above all they do not want to laugh about it with a foreigner...
3. Italy : eating spaghetti with a spoon is a crime !
We all have that friend who, one day said, "Yes, of course, true Italian eat spaghetti with a spoon and a fork ! ". WRONG! The Italians do not like it, as the knife ... so please use your fork and buon appetito :-)
4. "Yo": how not to be disrespectful to the elders in Korea.
Travel closer to the premises, that's good. Trying to communicate with a few sentences of your guide, that's good. But be careful to follow the rules of politeness ! In Korea for example, when speaking to an older person you must placed "Yo" at the end of every sentence ! Otherwise you will be considered as a rude person !
5. In winter, everyone in Quebec lives underground... really?
The truth about these underground is far from what we think it is ! Temperatures can reach -30°C over the winter. In Montreal, a vast underground network of 32 km connects malls, subways, cinemas, offices, and museums. But outdoors, life does not stop !
6. Everyone does not smoke marijuana in Amsterdam!
No, the majority of Dutch do not smoke marijuana contrary to what you think ! In Amsterdam the biggest consumers are not the residents ... but European tourists !
7. London and its double-decker tourist buses = rookie mistake!
We all know these London buses, which I like to call "tourists-traps". Do not make the mistake of paying £20, this is the mistake you shouldn'tt do ! Go for the public bus lines, they also have two floors and you will only pay £1.2.
Some gestures to avoid
> Greece and Pakistan : Indicating the number 5 with the hand does not mean much to us. But if you want to avoid any diplomatic indicent, don’t do it in Greece or Pakistan! In those countries, the number 5 brings bad luck on his family for 5 generations ... what could be a problem !
> Japan : Do not tend any object with the left or right hand, always use both hands. Otherwise they might take offense and turn around !
> Malaysia : When eating with a Malaysian, try when it’s possible to use only the right hand. The left is impure, as in many Muslim countries.
> Iran : Do not hitchhike with thumbs-up... In Iran, it means that you want to put a finger in their as*! No need to tell that you are on track to make friends !
> Cambodia : Never touch the head of a child (or an adult). It is considered an insult in their traditions as the head is the summit of the soul.
