Ruth, your local contact in Maldives
Hello, My name is Ruth ! I live in Hulhumale and I've been living here for 3 years. I discovered the Maldives 15 years ago, visiting as a SCUBA diver in search of mantas and whale sharks. I was fortunate and found a reasonably priced resort that allowed me to stay and indulge in my hobby but then came along development and my well loved resort went luxury and beyond my price range. So I moved to diving from a boat and this also in later years enabled me to gain an understanding of local island life. I always consider myself lucky to have found a group of Maldivian friends who would invite me to their family homes for dinner, to break fast during Ramadan and to share afternoon hedika
My love and appreciation of this country, it's people, it's culture and traditions was almost immediate and resulted in me visiting the archipelago on over 30 occasions in the years since. In 2012 the opportunity to relocate arose. I had at that point worked for the UK retailer British Home Stores for over 25 years and felt it was time for a change and so I moved to the country I now consider my home.
Let's go to Maldives !
The Maldives is no longer just a destination for honeymooners or those looking to relax in a luxury resort. There is now the opportunity to discover the real Maldives and combine culture and tradition with white sand beaches, warm blue waters and amazing coral reefs. Once you have visited you will want to come back! Maldivians are known for their friendliness and hospitality and nothing is too much trouble for them. It was this hospitality and eagerness to please that gave rise to the cultural aspects of our tours which allowed us to engage with local communities and businesses.
November to March is the driest and sunniest period to travel if you are looking for good weather conditions, however, if you don't mind the occasional rain shower and a cooling breeze then April to October is perfect. The average temperature is 30 degrees C all year round and being positioned almost on the equator there is 12 hours of daylight. Conditions for diving are good all year round, however, there are specific seasons if you are in search of mantas and whale sharks. With the Maldives being only 10% land mass water based activities are extremely popular and range from snorkeling, diving, surfing to kayaking, sunset cruises and fishing but my favorite places here will always be those where there is the opportunity to mix with locals and their families.
Secret Paradise, your local agency in Maldives
Our journey started in 2012 when the opportunity to relocate to the Maldives arose for me with a support of local businessman Ziyad Mohamed. We are currently the only Maldives based operator offering accompanied local island tours. Whilst we are based in Hulhumale, the capital, we offer tours and packages in 8 different atolls stretching over the 500 km north to south of the archipelago. We believe the idyllic beaches, turquoise lagoons, clear waters and coral reefs abundant with marine flora and fauna should be available to everyone regardless of budget. Our aim is to support local island tourism in a destination marketed for its luxury resorts and in so doing provide holidays that are affordable, fun and provide comfort along with a warm welcome allowing our guests an insight into the real Maldives and experience the best from the paradise we call home.
With us you will have insight into the culture and tradition of Maldivian life. We arrange accommodation in local island guesthouses, organize meals and visits with island families. We take our guests along to watch and (if they wish) join in local crafts lessons, cooking lessons and allow them to try their hand at traditional fishing and learn the art of the cultural Bodu Beru dance and music. We can of course ensure our guests experience all those other things for which the Maldives are renowned: diving and snorkeling, sunset safaris, world-class spas and wellness facilities.
