Andy and Rebecca, your local contacts in Scotland
We, Andy and Rebecca, are a lodge-based tour operator located in the Highlands of Scotland. We set up the company after having traveled extensively. I, Rebecca, also spent some time living abroad. A lot of the experiences I had while travelling have influenced how we run our business. We live in the Highlands of Scotland and have been here for the last 16 years. There's no where else we'd rather be. There is so much to explore in so many ways that we're spoiled for choice and are still discovering new places to visit even after 16 years.
We set up our business as a direct result of our personal experiences and have been lucky enough to turn our passions into a business. We have chosen to run the business as an extension of our family. Our guests stay within our home and share in our lifestyle as part of the experience of the area. Most of our guests love to explore the garden, read our books and pick our brains for the stories and insights which bring the area to life for them. We share meals with out guests and can often be found in the evening chatting with the group in the lounge by an open fire.
Let's go to Scotland !
Scotland is very far to the north and that we have never had a tradition of alpine huts or way marked paths across the mountains. A lot of people who live here have chosen to be here, though there are of course families who have been here through several generations as well. It is a small community but very friendly and helpful. Tourism is the biggest employer in our area and lots of the houses are run as holiday properties so they're not occupied all year round, but those people who live here all year round tend to have an interest in outdoor activities.
Generally spring and autumn provide the best weather opportunities as August can be a bit grey and wet. The Spring can be glorious with clear blue skies and no midges, but be prepared for the evenings to be chilly and snow can still fall. In the autumn, the colors are glorious with the leaves on the trees turning golden. We're also often treated to sunshine in the autumn. It's one of the best times to spot wildlife too as the evenings are starting to draw in giving a better opportunity to spot nocturnal beasts like the pine marten. In the middle of summer (July and August) there is certainly no problem visiting places - everywhere is open and daytime temperatures can be up to 28 C. Advance planning is essential.
Scot Mountain Holidays, your local agency in Scotland
We've owned and operated Fraoch Lodge for 16 years; it is home to both of us and our son, Gregor. And it’s also home to our guests who enjoy our charming boutique accommodations, warm hospitality, amazing home-cooking, custom designed hikes, cultural excursions, personalized service and the camaraderie of fellow travelers. We pride ourselves on our paralleled knowledge of the flora and fauna of our region and we are passionately committed to sustainability. We love sharing the Highlands including the spectacular Cairngorm National Park with our guests, many of whom tell us Fraoch Lodge and Boat of Garten (our home town) is “a special place like no other”. We have a suite of core walking holidays across the Highlands of Scotland including such iconic destinations as Skye, Mull and Arran as well as the Cairngorms.
We also run family adventures based around mountain biking and hiking to get an intimate experience of the Highlands but also tied in with the iconic culture and traditions which makes this part of Scotland so special. In the summer, we go to a Highland Games and if possible participate in events; we visit a working woollen mill and try our hand at weaving tweed and spinning yarn; we visit either the reindeer farm for a tour or a distillery and specialist whisky shop. All this wrapped up in a personal interpretation from your guide.
